One research area of additive manufacturing is material development and property optimisation, being investigated in our study through static mechanical tests. The materials tested are Al-Si alloys with 8–16 wt.% Si, without any other alloying elements. Tensile strengths achieved for the different materials are between 263 and 411 MPa. For AlSi16, the maximum tensile strength of 411 MPa was achieved at an elongation to fracture of 6.2%. Furthermore, the suitability of the individual powder batches for additive manufacturing was investigated by determining the flow function of the powder batches. Flow properties, particle size distribution and hardness were determined using additively manufactured cubes. A hardness of 149.7 HV10 was achieved for the alloy AlSi16.
